www.agiskoviner.com Autumn Roundup
National Medals for Young and Old alike!

This Summer has seen www.agiskoviner.com riders continue to build on the successes of the first half of the season.

Following on from our Junior Squad’s Team medals in the National 25m TT Championships and Kyle Tilley’s Bronze in the National Junior Keirin Champs, senior squad member John McClelland picked up his first National Medal in the 8Km Grass Track Champs at Mildenhall over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Former Commonwealth Games competitor McClelland, who a week before won Herne Hill’s ‘Roadman’s 25’ was followed home in the Bronze medal position by Road Team member and 2005’s South East Division RR champ, James Holland-Leader.

McClelland also rode the World Masters Track championship and just missed out on a bronze medal in the pursuit, while he rode well in the points race and Muratti Cup for two top ten placings.

Not to be out-done on the Track, the Road Squad have also been busy. On Saturday 10th September they won the Surrey League Team Championships at MOD Chertsey. With teams consisting of 5 members and only the first 3 counting, www.agiskoviner.com dominated the race and finished all 5 riders in the top 10.

Team founder, Gary Kristensen MBE was the highest finisher bringing home a small group of seven riders after Simon Saunders (SP Systems/Wightlink) had gambled on a successful lone break. Darrell Pembroke and Adrian Goatley were the other team counters.

Another National Medal came on Sunday 11th September when new club member and promising young talent Lara Wann came 2nd in the National Junior Women’s Road Race Champs. The race was being run in conjunction with the WCRA Championships, which meant that the juniors were also lining up against experienced seniors.

The race was won in a lone break by Brenda Pennell of ERV/Raleigh and Wann came 2nd in the bunch sprint to Louise Mahe of Sutton CC who, in winning the sprint, took home the National Jersey and Gold Medal. This was a remarkable achievement by Wann, who is a regular winner at Palmer Park Velodrome, considering it was her very first road race on open roads! She was supported in the race by Rebecca Stubbs, Melanie Williams and Sophie Ruderman who, with 3 in the top 10, would have won the team medal had there been one! A fantastic achievement considering that the Ladies squad is only just starting out. More riders are being sought to boost this squad. Details below.

On the TT front, Michael Broadwith showed that a recent cycling trip in the mountains of Pakistan did nothing to reduce his speed when he won the Ravensthorpe CC 50 mile Open Timetrial on Sunday 11th September. Winning the event by nearly 2 minutes with a time of 1:48:44, Broadwith’s performance is a far greater achievement when you consider he got to the event and realised he had forgotten his cycling shoes. A frantic search ensued and thanks to a kind fellow competitor, Broadwith rolled to the start in a pair of borrowed Size 9’s……2 sizes smaller than the size 11 he usually wears!

The TT team also continue to post good times and strong team results after winning the Andover wheelers 10 miler on the popular Thruxton and A303 based P613 course. Laurence Harding posted a new club record time of 19:31 for 2nd overall (compared to winner Ben Instone's (A3CRG/Bikedock) 19:28). Andrew Girling recorded 20:12 after coming back from a double stomach operation just a couple of months ago and Gary kristensen MBE posted a 20:34 to become 3rd counter. David Thomas also went sub 21 with 20:57 to show our strength in depth, while Junior James Boyman recorded London West's fastest 10 mile TT time (and a new Junior club record for us) of 21:18. He also followed this up with a 54:36 the next day, which would have placed him 4th overall!

As the Road season comes to an end, Cyclo cross rider Steve Price showed he will once again be a force to be reckoned with when he picked up 6th place at the first London Cyclo Cross League event. Price won the ‘rider of the day’ award after suffering with a mechanical problem that slowed him considerably, however he still had enough to chase back on and claim a respectable 6th place.

It is at this time of year where clubs and teams are looking out for new riders, and we are no exception. Even after all of our success in our first year, we are hungry for more riders who want to contribute for 2006 and beyond.

The club is based around a youth and Junior squad, so it is to them we look to for a solid base of riders to bring up “through the ranks”, however the U23 squad, which is possibly the most difficult period for any rider as they come out of the junior category and start to race with the seniors over much longer distances, is also keen to hear from any rider who fancies crossing the water to race in Belgium every couple of weeks, while still targeting a suitable race programme in the UK. To that end, we are looking for youths of any age as well as juniors keen to ride road, track and TT nationals, including the road series and track omniums.

The ladies squad is a new idea and one which we have least depth to at present, so ladies at all levels are welcome to apply. We have had remarkable success from our senior riders, who make up the road, TT and track teams, however we are still looking for riders capable of fast TT’s to challenge for National honours as well as road men who can compete and win at the South East Series level of events.

So, if you would like to be part of a successful club that supports and encourages riders at all levels and of all standards, please contact Gary Kristensen MBE via the website "Contact Us" link on www.agiskoviner.com.
