There was a time when every American home had a clothes line. Sometimes there were multiple lines strung up between two T-Bars spaced 20-30 feet. Other times, it was tied to whatever was there, a building or a tree. Often, a large stick was used to prop up the center so the freshly laundered clothing would not touch the ground.
Along came “progress,” and with it electric and gas driers. It seemed every home began to strive to acquire a clothes dryer.
Some of us though never moved past the clothesline. We did not understand why someone would want to pay for what the sun and breeze does free of charge. We also cannot understand why someone would subject his or her clothes and linen to fading from the high heat.
Once again, we seem to be shifting towards hanging our clothes out to dry. With the economy the way it is, it makes sense to cut back where we can. A good place to begin is with the help of a clothesline.
